Our next stop on the cleansing highway brings us to the tropical and fresh atmospheric waters of Hawaii. I want to focus on this because other than consuming refined sugar and caffeine, it is this area where our nutritional needs become crucial. For those in search of optimal health, the standard intake of fruits and vegetables is 5-9 servings every day. This poses a challenge for most people simply because it is difficult to consume that amount of roughage material in one day. For those unable or not aware of the wonders of fruit and vegetable juicing, this proves to be an even more daunting task. Enter Spirulina, a “green superfood”, it is the most nutritious, concentrated whole food known to humankind. Also known as “Nature’s Multivitamin”, just add one daily teaspoon serving of Spirulina to your diet and it provides more antioxidant activity than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. Anyone interested yet? Spirulina, which is a specific form of blue-green algae, are found in nature growing on the Hawaiian ocean floors and in the alkaline waters of lakes and ponds. They are natural foods that have existed since life began. Their nutritional content is broad and highly concentrated. Blue-green algae can help balance the flora in the gut, which aids digestion. Spirulina are rich in vitamins A, C, E and the B-complex vitamins, including vitamins B12 and B6. Since these vitamins are packaged in their natural form, they are in a highly usable state that makes them far superior to modern vitamin supplements. Spirulina aids the human body by boosting the immune system, providing amazing anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants and vitamin A. It also helps to promote cellular health within the body, making cells strong and healthy. The protein in Spirulina is 85-95% digestible, one of the highest available. In fact, Spirulina is second only to a dried egg supplement with regards to usable protein, and higher than any of the common foods in the form in which they are usually purchased. Spirulina provides a reduction on long-term health problems if taken regularly. There is no other food that has a higher volume of beta carotene and has concentrated levels of beta carotene, 10 times more than carrots. Here are some interesting facts… Spirulina has 2300% more iron than spinach Spirulina has 3900% more beta carotene than carrots Spirulina has 300% more calcium than whole milk Spirulina has 375% more protein than tofu Comparing phytonutrient levels, Spirulina is 31 times more potent than blueberries and 60 times more potent than spinach! Removal of toxins Of all these wonderful benefits that Spirulina provides, the main reason that yours truly takes it is for something entirely different. Spirulina is also known for its powerful ability to rid the body of wastes and toxins, especially heavy metals. I combine Spirulina with Sun Chlorella, another strain of green algae that grows in fresh water. This Superfood emerged over 540 million years ago, and was the first form of plant life with a well-defined nucleus. Both contain high levels of chlorophyll, the foundation of life. Combining both can aid the body in the breakdown of metallic toxins such as mercury, arsenic, aluminum, cadmium and lead, while strengthening the immune system response. This detoxification of metals and other chemical toxins in the blood will take 3-6 months (to build up enough to begin this process) depending on the dosage a person is taking. In spite of their nutritional punch, Spirulina and Chlorella do not pack a lot of calories. This makes it effortless to incorporate these superfoods into your diet regardless of your nutritional needs and preferences. So for a person that is on-the-go and can never seem to find the time to eat a decent meal, or if they are like me and strive for optimal health trying to rid my body of the heavy metals and other toxins that we are exposed to everyday, then Spirulina and Sun Chlorella are both worth a serious look. The type of Spirulina that I recommend is Pure Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica made by Nutrex-Hawaii. Take a moment and watch this video for awesome information and to get a better understanding about Spirulina. My good friend and business partner, Mike Wall, has a saying, “A nurtured mind and body are better equipped to make the important decisions that shape our life.” Let us begin making better decisions now by adding Spirulina to our daily diet.
