It is one of the scariest nutrition questions people ask after a cancer diagnosis: Does sugar feed breast cancer?
Does eating sugar make cancer grow?
According to the National Cancer Institute, no. Cancer cells do use glucose, but research has not shown that eating sugar makes cancer worse or that eliminating sugar makes cancer shrink or disappear.
That does not mean nutrition is irrelevant. Diets very high in added sugar can contribute to excess weight over time, but that is very different from saying a cookie “feeds” a tumor.
So should I avoid chocolate?
You do not need to be afraid of every food that tastes sweet. A better question is what your overall eating pattern looks like. Fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, seeds and other nutrient-dense foods can all be part of a balanced routine.
At Rockin’ Wellness, our Chocolate Cacao is made with real raw organic cacao and plant-based ingredients. We are proud of what is in the bag, but we will never tell you a shake prevents or treats cancer.
What matters more than a “perfect” diet?
Know your personal risk, keep up with recommended screening, stay active, limit alcohol and talk with your healthcare team about nutrition that fits your individual needs. Food should nourish you, not frighten you.
Rockin’ Wellness products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. People undergoing cancer treatment should discuss supplements and major dietary changes with their oncology team.
