Halloween Chocolate Labels: What Should You Actually Look For?

Halloween may be the one week of the year when chocolate practically becomes its own food group. No judgment here. But if you are curious about what is actually inside your chocolate, turn the package around.

What should I look for on a chocolate label?

Start with the ingredient list. Look at the cacao or cocoa ingredients, added sugars, oils, dairy ingredients, flavorings and anything else that matters to you.

Does “dark chocolate” automatically mean minimally processed?

No. Dark chocolate describes a category, not one universal recipe. And the words cacao and cocoa alone do not tell you exactly how an ingredient was processed.

If preserving more of cacao’s naturally occurring compounds matters to you, one useful question is whether the cocoa was alkalized or Dutch processed.

What makes Rockin’ Wellness different?

Our Chocolate Cacao uses real raw organic cacao, not alkalized cocoa. We want the cacao to remain cacao, not be processed into submission just to make it darker and milder.

Enjoy your Halloween candy. Seriously. Then keep a little room in your life for chocolate that started with a different goal.
